about

“Beauty will save the world” is the motto of St. Sabbas Monastery in Harper Woods, Michigan. It is quote from Prince Myskin, the main character in the novel “The Idiot” by the Orthodox Russian writer, Fyodor Dostoyevsky (d. 1881). Prince Myskin is a Christ-like character and perhaps due to his naivety and innocence has a clearer vision of beauty. In the original Greek, the word “truth” and “beauty” were the same word, adding even more intrigue to Dostoevky’s use of this line in his novel.

St. Sabbas Monastery strives daily for perfection in the liturgical arts to exemplify Prince Myskin’s quote, creating beauty in every possible venue within the monastery. This can be through painting the mystical icons which adorn the church walls, the monastic music which, with the incense, fills the holy space, the numerous monastery ponds and flower gardens which are reminiscent of the Garden of Eden, or the exquisite fine-dining offered at The Royal Eagle restaurant located on the monastery grounds. The Chef is from Czechoslovakia and is highly trained in the culinary arts in Europe to obtain perfection both for the palate, the presentation, and in the dining environment. Everything that is done at St. Sabbas Monastery is done to the highest standard of beauty, everywhere seeking truth in an earthly world, in preparation for the heavenly world which is to come, Lord-willing. Amen.

This recording of “Beauty Will Save the World, Volume 2” was composed and recorded by one of the monastics of St. Sabbas Monastery in Harper Woods, Michigan.
